Attack on America

September 11, 2001: Terror Tuesday, a day that changed America--and the world--forever.

It's hard to believe another terrorist group can outdo the IRS in either cowardice or sheer damage, but it's finally happened.

The cost in lives is huge, the loss of property is in the billions, and hundreds of companies are now dislocated and homeless. People throughout the world are suffering financial loss and personal fear on a scale never before reached.

Are there any silver linings in this dark, dark cloud? Yes, some--though it's hard to rejoice over them at the moment.

The nations of China, Russia, and the U.S. are setting aside their petty differences. This is the first time in history that nearly every nation has announced itself an ally of the United States--and that includes some that may well have nuclear arms pointed at us. In New York, a city known for callousness, people are banding together. Teens spontaneously gathered in front of the White House to hold hands and sing. They are singing the National Anthem, Amazing Grace, and other songs of hope and faith--in an era where the national view of teens has been dim. The Democrats and the Republicans have put their normal lunacy aside and are now actually working together for the good of the country--rather than trying to outdo each other in how they can best fleece the citizens.

We will need these silver linings to offset the cultural damage that has forever changed our view of our nation and our world. Never again will we feel safe and confident as we go about our daily business. Anger, grief, sadness, fear--not exactly the emotions that build us up and carry us forward. Yet, forward we must go.

A caution: These terrorists had reasons for what they did, and demonizing their culture rather than figuring out how to solve the root problems will just bring on more of the same. That doesn't justify what they did, but it gives thinking people something to think about. They demonized us as a culture and we became faceless targets. Imitating their behavior is beneath us. Bring the individuals culprits to justice (or bring justice to them), but don't demonize nations or religions. We are all related somehow. Treat your relatives with respect.

Attention all terrorists: Chill out! We're not that different from you. Whether you are hiding in a cave in Afghanistan or behind a desk at the IRS, you're still a human being--as are your victims. Whatever your problem is, let's work it out. If you don't want to work it out, we will eliminate you and all you stand for.

We're not perfect, but we have brought the world more wealth, technology, science, and accomplishment than any nation in history. We continue to produce great works of art, music, and literature. We are the bread basket of the world. God bless all Americans and our allies throughout the world. If you're not for us, you are against us. Choose wisely.
