Some more thoughts on SEO

Don't get carried away with SEO. Conversion is also critical. The two should work together.

The most common strategic error is that of trying to fool the search engines, while forgetting that it's your shoppers who really matter. Tactics like keyword stuffing, for example, often render sites with unappealing content. Also, you have only so many resources. If they are overly focused on search engine games, you won't be doing the important work of helping your customers with a well-designed, well-maintained Website.

The second most common strategic error is cramming too much information onto each page, in an effort to provide "content for SEO purposes." A related error is creating garbage pages for the same reason. What you want is good content. Imagine you are running a bricks and mortar store, and your "content" consists of what you say to each customer who walks in. Would you really spew a bunch of nonsense at people, or would you instead help guide them to the products they want and then provide the information they need to make a purchasing decision?

The bulk of your SEO work should be based on producing quality content that conforms to Google's Webmaster guidelines (if you don't appear in Google, you're nearly invisible). Those guidelines are deliberately vague, focusing on principles rather than details. That's where the video above is so valuable.

The bulk of your conversion work should be based on doing things so the visitor doesn't have to think. You don't want people thinking, you want them buying. So provide clear navigation, crisp design, and clear content. This sounds easy, but it's apparently not because so few Websites seem to do it even moderately well. But if you get people to your site and they just click away, then your SEO work is all rather pointless, isn't it?
