At one time, good machinists were plentiful. For a variety of reasons, that is no longer the case. Consequently, it's difficult to get custom work done. It's even harder to get it done right and to get it done at an affordable price.

This situation has caused many people to turn to plastic. They can order a plastic part that gets made from a 3-D printer. The problem is the part is plastic, not metal, but is being used where metal is required. This results in premature failure of the entire mechanism, sometimes with expensive collateral damage.
