Tips on keeping your home clean.
  1. Shower before going to bed, rather than in the morning. This way, you're not bringing the day's dirt to bed.
  2. Set up an area where shoes come off when people come in, and/or provide slip-on booties for your guests. Shoes are notorious for bringing dirt and pet dung into the house.
  3. Change your bedding once per week. Use hot water to kill dust mites.
  4. Keep windows and doors closed between 10AM and 3PM; these are the peak pollen hours, and during this window of time you will get the most "dust" entering your home.
  5. Wipe bathroom floors daily with a damp cloth. The floor in the typical bathroom is easily cleaned and is where the most "dead cell detritus" is typically generated. Clean at the source, and you won't need to clean up this stuff elsewhere.
  6. Use a high-efficiency filter in your HVAC system, and run the whole-house fan when you are home.
  7. Using a wet rag, dust your bathroom floors at least twice a week.
  8. Eat only in designated areas. Walking around the house with food means you will have food everywhere. Along with the bugs that eat the crumbs and droppings.
  9. Use baking soda and vinegar to clean drains. This is surprisingly effective. Done weekly, it reduces the chances of drain clogs and eliminates drain odor sources.
  10. If you're using an automatic vacuum cleaner system, check daily to see if the canisters need emptying.
  11. Check corners for dust accumulation.
  12. Wipe window frames. In the winter, use a dry cloth to prevent mold growth. In the summer, use a cloth dampened with a 20% vinegar (to water) solution.
  13. Clean your refrigerator drawers once per week. Wipe with a cloth dampened with a 50% vinegar solution.
  14. Pull your refrigerator out once a month, and clean the area with a damp cloth. Turn the unit off and blow out the coils with your vacuum arranged to blow (then vacuum up the floor).
  15. Pull your range out every other month and clean the area.
  16. Eliminate clutter. If you have things sitting out on countertops and other surfaces, you can't clean those surfaces. Getting rid of clutter not only makes it easier to clean a home, it makes the home seem bigger.
  17. Schedule some minor cleaning nearly every day. Spending five or ten minutes a day is far less daunting than setting aside a whole day once a month and living in grime in the interim.
  18. Come up with a cleaning method that allows you to completely clean a room. Tackle one room once a week. You won't get all rooms in your house each month, but when you do get them they will be clean, clean, clean. Keep a list of tasks and add to it as you go about this job. Don't forget to vacuum ceilings that have the popcorn finish; a great deal of dust gets stored there. Clean ceiling fan blades, windows, door frames, etc.
