By Cathy Richey, the Cathy Factor
Jose Antonio Dominguez Banderas, born August 10, 1960, better known as
Antonio Banderas, is a Spanish film actor, film director, film producer and
singer. He began his acting career at age 19 with a series of films by
director Pedro Almodóvar and then went on to appear in high-profile
Hollywood films.
Born in Malaga, Spain, Banderas attended the School of Dramatic Arts in
his hometown, and upon graduation he began his acting career working in a
small theater company based there. He later moved to Madrid and became a
member of the prestigious National Theater of Spain.
In 1982, Banderas was cast by writer/director Pedro Almodovar in
Labyrinth of Passion. It was the first of five films Banderas would do with
Almodovar, the others being Matador, Law of Desire, Women on the Verge of a
Nervous Breakdown and Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down! The international success of
these films introduced him to Hollywood. For his American film debut in
Mambo Kings in 1992, he spoke no English yet learned all of his dialogue
phonetically.
He went on to land his first starring role in Desperado in 1995 and
continued with the following films, Once Upon a Time in Mexico with Johnny
Depp and Salma Hayek. Since then, he has starred in such films as Spy Kids,
Spy Kids 2, Original Sin, Four Rooms, Assassins, Miami Rhapsody, Never Talk
to Strangers, Interview with a Vampire, House of the Spirits and
Philadelphia. He's probably best known for his role as Zorro, and the voice
of Puss in Boots, the Shrek movies.
Banderas received critical praise and a Best Actor Golden Globe
nomination for his acting and vocal talents as 'Che' opposite Madonna in the
big-screen adaptation of the musical Evita. Other awards to his credit
include a Tony nomination for Best Actor in a Musical for his Broadway debut
in the Roundabout Theater Company production of NINE, a musical inspired by
Fellini's 8 ˝.
He also received a Best Actor Drama Desk Award, Outer Critics Circle
Award, Drama League Award and Theatre World Award.
In 1995, Banderas became romantically involved with Melanie Griffith
while working on the film Two Much. He was married to Spanish Actress Ana
Leza since 1988, but their eight-year marriage soon ended. Griffith was
married to Don Johnson. Banderas and Griffith were married after a whirlwind
romance in May of 1996. They welcomed the birth of their first child,
Estella del Carmen, the following September. So far, their marriage has
managed to endure the wrath of the tabloids and the paparazzi.
When he fell in love with Melanie he had a ready-made family-- Melanie's
daughter Dakota Mayi Johnson (born October 1989, father -- Don Johnson) and
son Alexander Bauer (born late August, 1985, father - Steven Bauer. While
Antonio still has to travel a lot, he has set up roots in both the house he
purchased in Brentwood California, and in Spain, a lovely house in the
Monteros section of Marbella. He lives balanced between two continents.
