Sure, you don't egregiously violate the traffic laws and put other drivers at risk. But you have good reasons for being able to tell where radar and laser speed traps are. For example:

You don't want to get hit with a speeding ticket just because you go 10 MPH over the limit out in the boonies with nary a car in sight.
You know that everybody goes over the limit at times. You'd rather get a warning from your detector than make that poor patrol cop have to stand by the highway writing you a ticket. Most cops would prefer this, too--just shoot the radar and everybody gets notified to slow it down.
With state and local budgets now squeezed due to the sheer weight of the federal debt pressing down on our economy, the speed trap is an increasingly common taxation device. But why should you pay taxes to a town you are merely passing on the highway? Aren't you taxed enough already?
With today's economy, the last thing you want is to pile up points and see your insurance go sky high.

I've been using radar detectors for over 20 years and was just blown away by the Cobra 9970G. I had originally been looking for laser/radar protection that's up with today's standards. This has that and far, far more. GPS and camera detection among other things. It's pretty amazing.

This thing even spots camera enforced zones. Amazing. I like the display, and have mounted this right under my rear view mirror and ran an extender cable behind the upholstery down to under the dash and over to my accessory plug. It looks impressive, there. I'm finding I actually pay more attention to my speed because I'm alerted wherever there is any chance of getting a ticket. So I'm a safer driver on top of the other benefits.

I drive a rig, and have gotten my share of tickets. These have always been for minor amounts over the limit, which I could have avoided if I'd spotted Smokey ahead of time. For a long time, I relied on radio to alert me but obviously that wasn't working. I had a pro set this Cobra up so it blends in and the power cord is hidden. It gives me the direction I'm heading, tells me of radar traps (there are plenty on the routes I drive), and warns me of other problems. Plus, it smokes out Smokey. I figure it's saved me twice its purchase price already due to spotting a couple of X band traps, and I haven't had it much more than a month.
