Scan Time

For a mobile device, the scans are quick. But they aren't quick in the sense that you wave the pen over the page and pick it all up. Here are actual benchmarks from testing conducted by a customer who is retired now but was an engineer with a major technology company for over 20 years.

Based on an 8-1/2 x 11 page of average text:

  • In Black and White Mode, it takes about 10 seconds to scan (actually moving down the page) and then takes another 20 seconds to save (the device shows the message "Saving" in 300 dpi B&W mode. The DocuPen can capture about 2 B&W pages per minute at 300dpi; it is busy for 30 seconds while handling one black and white page at 300dpi.
  • In Color Mode, it takes about 20 seconds to scan and about another 70 seconds to save in 300 dpi color mode. The docupen is busy for 1-1/2 minutes while handling one color page.

Please understand that this is a mobile device capturing a huge amount of information and doing that job with high accuracy. For high-volume scanning, you would use production-grade flatbed scanner. A typical scanner in this class weighs 27 pounds, considerably more than the 2.5 ounce DocuPen. As there are 16 ounces in a pound, it would take 173 DocuPens to equal the weight of a typical production scanner.

Physical
  • Weighs only 2.5 ounces (71 grams).
  • Pen Size: 8.9" x 0.5" x 0.5" (227mm x 13 mm x 13mm).

Power

  • Recharges through USB connecter, in about 40 minutes.
  • Battery: Lithium-polymer Rechargeable Battery (charges through USB cable).
  • Battery Life: Ample.

Note on battery: The biggest problem with lithium ion batteries is that of overcharging (this heats the paste, reducing battery life). This pen is designed for you to not have to think about charging. The way it works is you discharge while making the scans and recharge while transferring files. Lithium batteries accept a partial charge, with no problem. If you find the battery seems to be weak, charge for 1 to 4 hours. Charging more than this won't provide more battery charge, it will only reduce the battery life.

System Requirements

  • Windows 98/2000/ME/XP/Vista.
  • 32 MB RAM (minimum).
  • 60 MB Hard Drive space (minimum).
  • USB port.
  • CD ROM.

Other

  • Expandable Memory Option: MicroSD USB Mass storage device function.
  • Image file formats: jpg, tiff
  • Image Technology: PLANon Crystal Line Contact (PCLC)
  • Interface: Twain.
  • Connectivity: USB 1.1 and 2.0 through integrated USB connector cable.

5 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 5 No downside to it at all, a great scanner, 5.27.2011
Reviewer: Ron Carlson (Rochester, MN)

My original intention was to use this pen scanner strictly for travel. I don't scan a lot of things, but when I need a scan I want it to have good resolution, I want the scanner not to malfunction midscan, and I want it to be reasonably quick. So I have now tossed out my Canon flatbed and am using this PLANon pen exclusively. Well made product, thank you!

5 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 5 Quite impressive, 7.20.2010
Reviewer: Sherrie Jackson (Denver, CO)

I do a lot of research and often need to capture an entire page or three. In the past, I had to make a photocopy and then run that on my flatbed scanner when I got back to the office. Total hassle. With this Planon mobile scanner, I can scan a page and transfer it directly to my computer when I get back. It is a little slow sometimes at "swallowing" the scan, but while the pen is doing that I'm working through material anyhow. Great job, Planon!

5 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 5 Lots of power in a small package, 4.20.2010
Reviewer: Mike Gunther (Chicago, IL)

I admit I'm a mobile device junkie. It's not because I think the devices are perfect solutions, but because I am always looking for devices that let me do specific jobs while on the go. I'm currently involved in a project that means lots of time in a law library doing case research and in a technical research library getting some pretty headspinning stuff. None of these materials can be removed. Not wanting to take handwritten notes or feed coins to a copying machine, I looked at small scanners. I liked the idea of one I could hook to my laptop, but didn't like the idea of lugging my laptop along with it. So I bought this Planon stick-style scanner. I understand the limits of mobile devices, after all there's a reason desktop machines have big fans and mobile devices don't. This scanner isn't nearly as speedy as the big HP I use at the office. But then, it really doesn't need to be and I can carry it anywhere. Based on what's reasonable with today's technology, I give this my rare 5 star rating.

1 out of 51 out of 51 out of 51 out of 51 out of 5 too many problems, 3.22.2010
Reviewer: Torsten Steinert (Berlin, Berlin)

Not really suited for scanning pages from books because the case of the pen is much larger than the actual scanning area. Also the higher resolutions are are not really usable because it takes >30 seconds to store the scan on its memory card. Also after each scanning the pen shuts off and needs to be turned on again, if you want to scan several pages. Regarding shut off: I have lots of problem getting the scans on my computer. When I connect the USB cable, turn the DocuPen on, then it shows as a removable media on my computer. By the time I have selected the files to copy (drag/drop), the DocuPen shuts off again, leaving me unable to actually copy scans. I regret buying it.

Reviewer: Tim Pendergast (Los Gatos, CA)

It's light, it's portable, it's convenient, it's accurate. I'd like to say it's fast, but it scans at the speed my spare flatbed does and I bought that in 2001. I guess you can't have it all.
