The Planon DocuPen scans a full page width and therefore scans the entire page including text and graphics in as little as 4 seconds. And it weighs only 2 ounces. It's a full-page scanner you can carry conveniently and easily.

Two ounces and a compact package is much easier than lugging around a laptop and tethered scanner to do the same thing. Scan full pages without breaking your back or your pocketbook.

Note on battery: The biggest problem with lithium ion batteries is that of overcharging (this heats the paste, reducing battery life). This pen is designed for you to not have to think about charging. The way it works is you discharge while making the scans and recharge while transferring files. Lithium batteries accept a partial charge, with no problem. If you find the battery seems to be weak, charge for 1 to 4 hours. Charging more than this won't provide more battery charge, it will only reduce the battery life.

All versions

The DocuPen R7 series (monochrome) and RC8 series (color) include PaperPort from Nuance. This powerful software provides you with the capability to find, organize, and share digital documents.

With automatic OCR (Optical Character Recognition) capability, the software will convert your scanned documents into editable text. PaperPort also offers seamless integration with Microsoft Word, Outlook, Notepad, Wordpad, and a variety of graphics programs. By selecting on a scanned document, OCR will convert your documents into editable text.

PaperPort is one of the most efficient ways for people to organize themselves, find and share paper, PDF, and digital documents. PaperPort combines the power of creating PDF, the convenience of network scanning, and the efficiency of document management, into a single, easy-to-use desktop application.

PaperPort integrates with many of your computer's existing applications such as Outlook Express for immediate creation of an e-mail while attaching your digital files.

PaperPort also integrates with Microsoft Word, Notepad and Wordpad to perform OCR (Optical Character Recognition) capabilities.

Pro versions

The Pro versions include PaperPort, but take you to the professional level by also including the ABBYY FineReader. This is professional level software for OCR (Optical Character Recognition) and PDF conversion. This awarding-winning software offers the highest level of recognition accuracy and format retention available.

ABBYY sure beats manual data entry and typing--neither of which you have time for. But it goes well beyond just eliminating that loathsome drudgery.

It also provides powerful functionality for converting images received from a scanner, a digital camera, or by fax into editable and searchable formats. And, yes, it can do that with PDFs, too.

The program accurately retains formatting and layout of documents and supports a wide range of recognition languages and output file formats.

Speedy for me, impresses clients, 10.2.2009

I have a large sales territory. Many of our clients are small shops with hardly any computerization. I can now take an order by scanning their handwritten notes, drawings, and even objects and e-mailing those to our graphics guy. He can often turn around a design in a couple of hours, meaning I can swing by later in the same day to close the deal. We used to lose orders because of Postal delays, now we book revenue.
