Pez began life as a peppermint candy in Austria, back in the
1920s (well before Arnold Schwarzenneger began lifting weights in Austria!).
Since
Austrians speak German, they called these peppermint candies by the German word for
peppermint: Pfefferminz. Shortened, that's simply PEZ.
Today, PEZ Candy, Inc., makes PEZ candies in Orange, CT, and sells over 3 billion
candies in the USA alone, each year.
PEZ sells candies and dispensers in over 60 countries. The dispensers, made in Austria
and several other nations, are the the big draw. With their variety of shapes and designs,
they are fun to play with and fun to collect. Thus, PEZ has great popularity all over the
world.
You can't buy discontinued PEZ dispensers from the company. Once they stop making
a particular one, they sell their inventory of it. This adds to the rarity and value of
individual PEZ items.
There are fake PEZ containers, like the Elvis Presley one that appeared in the film,
"The Client." PEZ did not make this--it was a prop for the movie.
