11 Habits of highly defective people

Copyright, Mindconnection

Why do some people succeed, and others simply seem to tread water? Why do most of us struggle and make the barest of progress? Why do we find our lives seemingly undermined as we pursue careers, family life, friendships, fitness goals, and other worthy aspirations? As Pogo said, “We have met the enemy and he is us.”

In classical martial arts training, one of the first things a student learns is s/he has two enemies: the one without, and the one within. The enemy the student must first conquer is the enemy within. It is on this premise that we will discuss the eleven habits of highly defective people.

While such the title of this course smacks of humor, it reminds us that we are the sum of our habits. Good habits don’t always make for a good life—not all things are within your control. However, bad habits can make quite a mess out of what would otherwise be a good life. Bad habits turn good luck into bad, opportunities into calamities, and progress into spiraling decay.

This particular course on of eleven habits isn’t meant to give you an all-inclusive list. No list of such habits can ever be complete, because humans can always find a way to fail. However, humans can also find ways to succeed, to create, to love. If you have the discipline and determination to overcome these particular habits, your mindset will be such that you won’t engage in the self-defeating behaviors that shoot so many of us in the foot. You will have conquered the enemy within.

While Stephen R. Covey did address positive habits very well, he didn't identify what people typically do wrong. Why is this important? You've heard that one "aw sh--" wipes out 1,000 "attaboys" and that's true. It's also true that if you have a particular bad habit, it can overshadow everything you do right.

For example, think about Bob, who is a salesman. He knows the product. He knows his industry. He knows his customers. He shines his shoes. He's a great speaker. He sells an industrial product that all of his customers use and at prices that are very competitive. So why are Bob's sales so dismal? Because he has developed the habit of picking his nose while walking from his car to the main lobby. As customers started seeing this, they just did not want to do business with Bob. Or shake his hand.

Sound like a crazy story? Well, maybe it is crazy. But do you know what one habit you have that is holding you back? Maybe, as is more likely, you have four or five such habits; can you name them?

This course identifies the eleven common habits that keep people from being successful. It explains how to end those habits, and what to do instead. Yes, you might master the 7 habits of highly effective people. But if you have even one of these eleven habits, that won't do you much good.

Isn't it time you fixed what's wrong, instead of hoping you can do enough right to make up for it? How many people do you know who work hard and seem to do all the right things but still end up missing that promotion, not getting that job offer, or in some other way not succeeding? Probably, this describes quit a few people you know, because the main reason people don't get ahead isn't that they still need to do seven things. It's that there's one thing they do that erases the value in everything else they do.

Fix that one bad habit, and you're on your way.
