Hard-training athletes who use amino acid supplements find they can achieve greater muscle mass with the same amount of effort, less cost, and fewer calories than trying to get the same amino acids from powdered proteins. FREE Shipping and sale prices on most amino supplements.
What are they?
Amino acids are the building blocks of proteins. When you eat protein, your digestive system breaks it down into its consituent amino acids. Then your body assembles those amino acids into the proteins needed to perform such functions as repair muscle tissues during your workout recovery phase.
Some amino acids are called "essential" because your body can't make them from other amino acids and it's essential you get them in your diet. That doesn't mean you can be careless about your amino acid sources. It just means you need to ensure those sources contain enough of the "essential" amino acids along with all the other ones.
One obvious benefit of supplementing with amino acids is you ensure your body meets its amino acid needs. Since the protein in your diet is composed of amino acids and will be broken down into them, getting "enough protein" is roughly synonymous with getting enough of the amino acids you need.
Roughly, but not quite. Each protein source (eggs, beans and rice, meat, cow's milk, goat's milk, a given protein powder, etc.) has a different amino acid profile. Further, the quality of the individual source and the preparation of it will affect the composition and absorption of the amino acids.
Inadequate amino intake can occur even with excessive protein intake. This is why supplementing with amino acids often is the smart thing to do. By supplementing with aminos, you can eliminate deficiencies that are giving you problems. That means you get such benefits as:
Eliminating "tired quad syndrome." In an interview with Shawn Ray, 8-time Mr. Olympia Lee Haney said, "You have to do squats." The reason this core exercise produces results is it is so damaging to so much muscle tissue. It causes an immediate spike in cortisol, but that's followed by sustained elevation of testosterone (lasting up to several days). It's during this high-T phase that all of your muscles will grow. But if you don't have the amino acids you need all you end up with is tired quadriceps.
Higher energy levels. Related to "tired quad syndrome" is a general fatigue caused by lack of the amino acids needed to repair the muscle tissue damaged during a workout. You just lack the energy to take your workout to the intensity level needed to stimulate the adaptive response. This is your body's way of stopping you from doing more damage that it lacks the materials to repair.
Increased muscle mass. If your amino acid intake is barely adequate, then your body will attempt to restore your muscles to their preworkout condition. You won't get an adaptive response that results in more muscle mass. But with amino acid supplementation, this problem goes away. The result? Increased size and strength.
If you look at these benefits, you see that amino acid supplementation serves as a sort of "muscle armor" that protects you from the damage caused by hard workouts. It doesn't do that per se, because when you subject a muscle to hard contractions as in a workout you are actually bursting individual muscle cells (causing them to die).
The body's response is to replace those cells with new ones. If your body has the amino acids it needs, it can make those new cells a little bigger plus create more cells than you started with. This is exactly the process that produces muscle growth. It can't be done without the amino acids required to produce those muscle cells.
