CEUs

We sometimes get questions about the meaning of CEU credits, PDHs, and CEUs. Here's a summary of what each of thesemeans:

CEU: Continuing Education Unit. Each state has its own definition "CEU."
CEU credit. Study or other activity that counts toward fulfilling your CEU requirements. A CEU credit is not a CEU.
PDH. Professional Development Hour. An hour of study or other activity that counts toward accumulating the minimum number of CEUs for license renewal. In most states,the license holder must report thenumber of PDHs or their equivalent in CEU credits.

Earning CEU credits and PDHs

The state in which you are licensed has a CEU policy. This policy contains your state's definition of a CEU. This is not the same in each state. And there'sno national definition. The definition of CEU credit also varies by state. That's why providers of training materials typically use PDHs. One state counts a PDH as one CEU credit, another counts 10 PDHs as a CEU credit. Check with your state when adding up CEU credits. But note that the value of a PDH remains constant. The various state CEU requirements work out to about the same number of hours of professional development. Thus, PDH is a fairly uniform yardstick.

In the case of a training DVD, the PDH number is simply the length of the video. So a two-hour video means two PDHs. Pretty obvious.

If you take a course or buy a book, how many PDHs is it worth? ThePDH information is typically on the Website or product. It might be stated as CEU credits, though. For example, it may say "6 hours of CEU credit." That does not mean 6 CEUs. It means 6 PDHs. The provider determined that the typical student requirez 6 hours to complete the material. Whether you actually take 1 hour or 60 is irrelevant. If the provider states the CEU credits or the PDHs, that's the number you must use.

Licensing authorities count many things for CEU credit. Contact your state licensing board for a list. A handful of states require "pre-approval" of certain courses or course providers. Most don't require pre-approval. However, this still implies you are using reputable course providers (such as us). Note that the Mike Holt products we sell are approved in all 50 states.
