5 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 5 Quite helpful, easy to follow, 3.23.2013

I am definitely not someone who likes to sit around and read. So studying for any kind of exam is a problem. I really have to put my mind to it. My wife got me to looking at this Mike Holt exam prep and we decided to go for it. I talked to my boss, committed to the program, and got the company to buy it for me. The reading actually wasn't bad. And everything made sense as I went. I found when taking the quizzes and such I was usually getting the right answers. Learning fast, just by reading? Not something I thought possible. And the videos were also very helpful. Our dog watched these with me (really), so we got some bonding time there (no grounding time, and yes I read Article 100!). This was definitely a good investment of my time and my company's money.

I've never enjoyed studying, so wasn't real keen on getting this exam prep system. But my boss strongly "suggested" to get this and the company would pay for it and the exam even if I failed. If I took the exam and failed without the prep, it was on me. It did not take me long to really get into this. I mean, it was actually a lot of fun. Instead of getting frustrated like I usually do with books and quizzes, I felt like I was getting somewhere every night that I studied. My wife (the other boss I report to) even said the studying left me in a good mood. THAT is a first. Well, I did pass that exam and I now have my Journeyman's license. Sorry it took so long to get around to thanking you for this and writing this review. Since getting that license, I have been busy!

One of my pet peeves with instructional material is they assume you know certain things and then you're lost. I've had that experience in the classroom, too. With this exam prep package, that wasn't the case. The electrical theory workbook, for example, started from the beginning and built from there. Yeah, in those first few chapters there was a lot of stuff I knew but also some I didn't and so I ended up with a complete understanding instead of being confused. It was easy for me to keep progressing through that book and this knowledge helped me understand why the NEC requires certain things. I had actually tried the simulated exam before anything else, and not only was it hard but I didn't do well. After completing the workbooks and videos, which took a few weeks, I tried it again. HUGE difference. So now I know I am completely prepared to pass that exam with flying colors.

3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Clear explanations, too much information, 6.18.2012

The material was very good, but there was just too much of it. I already knew electrical theory and Ohm's Law and just needed to make sure I would pass the exam. So I ended up spending a lot of time on subjects I already knew. To be fair, our purchasing people bought this without getting my input. This program is really for someone just starting out, not for someone experienced as myself. It would have been nice if there had been some kind of color coding, such as green for greenhorn stuff, blue for beginners, and the rest is for experienced electricians who need to pass the exam and already know the green and blue stuff. I have to say that, where it got into NEC calculations especially conductor sizing it was awesome. This is where I was looking for good training, and I was not disappointed. My boss had me do the practice exam questions on photocopies before going into the material, and I failed. But after going through the course, I scored 96%. Money well spent, even with the additional material I didn't need.

I did end up passing my journeyman exam. Other people in the room were sweating, but not me. This course was a big help. I had no idea it would involve so many hours of study to get through it, I had been thinking they were getting me something more like Cliff notes but my boss said failing the exam was not an option. In addition to passing the exam, I feel like I'm a better electrician. My foreman agrees.

I'm very impressed with the quality of these materials. One of my buddies bought an exam prep course from another company, and it made both our heads spin. Just could not understand it. But the Mike Holt texts are crystal clear and the videos make a lot of sense in explaining the concepts and practical applications. I'm pretty sure I'll pass the exam, now. Thanks!
