This section explains what the Thai translation tools are on the Thai electronic translators, and how they work. These tools help two people communicate, even though one speaks Thai and the other speaks English. These tools are designed for both you and the Thai language speaker to use.
Full text translation. Available in the 900 and iTravl translators, but not for the Thai language. Sorry. This feature allows you to type in your own random sentence. It's also called sentence translation.
Pictured Dictionary. Available in the 900 and iTravl Thai electronic translators. With the talking 183-language Picture Dictionary, you can translate in any direction. They say a picture is worth a thousand words. Either person can look up a word and show the other person a pictorial representation. It's simple, quick, and clear.
You can also read the text translation and hear it spoken aloud in a natural human voice.
Translation Dictionary. This, like the phrasebook (below), is a standard feature in today's electronic translators. It allows word for word translations. In the higher end models, it also has natural human voice output (see specs tab) and provides additional information such as common phrases in which that word is used. In the Ectaco line, it differs from the Pictured Dictionary in that it doesn't have the pictures or all the languages, but does have a massively deep vocabulary for the language pair it covers.
The audio phrasebook was recorded with professional native narrators. Consequently, it delivers superb voice output.
The "You may hear" function helps another person select an answer from a list of canned answers. For instance, having picked the topic "In a restaurant," you choose a phrase. The waiter wants to reply to that phrase. You then select the "You may hear" option listed in the restaurant category (there is such an option in each category). The waiter can select the answer from the list provided.
A "phrase" is usually a complete sentence. It's called a "phrase" out of tradition.
This handy, easy to use feature is a word substitution tool for existing phrases in the phrasebook. You don't actually "build sentences" with it. Here's how you use Sentence Builder:
Choose a phrase.
Tap on a hyperlinked word in the phrase. This brings up a short list.
Tap a word from the list to replace the hyperlinked word with the one you tapped
The iTravl and 900-series Thai electronic translators provide several easy to use language learning tools.
Language Teacher. The interactive language teacher system is a powerful tool for learning other languages. It can listen to you and tell you how well you pronounce something in another language.
Linguistic Crossword. A crossword puzzle that helps you learn new words in the target language.
Linguistic Flashcards. Four different flashcard games that help you learn new words in the target language.
The iTravl and 900 series Thai electronic translators are optionally available with additional items packaged as separate products. For example:
The iTravl comes in a Deluxe version (for certain language pairs). "Deluxe" means you get a scanning pen and cradle charger with it. That's a pretty sweet deal, when you compare the package price to the individual prices. The 900-series also gives you a Deluxe version, which again is a scanning pen (no cradle) bundled at a cost-savings.
The 900-series Grand version is a Deluxe, but also with a GPS and:
4GB language card w/GPS map.
Car power adapter.
Headphones with mic.
We provide the manual for every pocket translator, and you can download it for free before buying the actual translator. You'll see a Resources tab on the product page of each translator, and the download link is there. Also, the iTravl and 900-series pocket translators have an electronic manual onboard.
That said, these devices are so simple to operate that most people can start translating without ever having read the manual.
The Secure Digital (SD) card defines the device for touchscreen translators (iTravl, 900). So for any given language set, that SD card comes with it. But you can also buy additional language pairs or sets of pairs on SD cards to expand your device. You do not need to buy the Thai SD card when you buy your Thai electronic translator; that card comes with the Thai electronic translator.
We offer the complete line of accessories for all of the translators we sell. You can find accessories from the Accessories tab of the product page for any specific translator.
To see the specifications of a given Thai electronic translator model, click on it and then click the Specs tab. You'll notice that for any given series, there are common specifications. And for any given model, there are specifications relevant to that model.
